It went from “I want to get fit and toned,” to “I want to be thin,” to “I want to be so skinny that my bones stick out and people wonder if I ever eat.”
No. It doesn’t. It won’t. When you fast for more than 12 hours the body starts burning fat, and it burns fat until there’s no more fat to burn. That’s when it starts burning muscles and organ tissues. So, yeah, only a few know a normal body has 100,000 calories of fat = 50 days of survival if you fast. Look up ketosis on google and you’ll know why you feel dizzy, you feel dizzy because your body is used to burn glucose instead of fat and it becomes a sugar addict. When your body gets used to burning fat instead of using glucose as its main energy source, you stop feeling dizzy because there’s plenty of energy in it.
The only reason why your body likes glucose so much it’s because it’s instant energy, unlike fat, which requires more effort to be burned.
Actually, some of it IS correct but some isn’t. I took a whole class on human digestive biochemistry and these things I can tell you are, starvation mode is bullshit, enough time post meal and your body will break down fat for energy, and your body only breaks down muscle when glycogen (found in the liver and muscles but the muscles do NOT like to give it away and for good reason) stores are low and when there is no glucose intake to supplement. It’s not the preferred method (obviously because you would die much quicker and nature is all about survival).
BUT this means that if you starve for long enough, your body will have to take those glycogen stores from the muscle and then it will have to break down muscle for amino acids. This is a last resort, but you don’t want to play with this because your heart is a muscle. Your blood vessels are lined with muscle. You rely on the muscles in your diaphragm and ribs to breathe. If those can’t maintain tetanus (a steady contraction. when you start to get very shaky it’s because the small muscle fibers are failing to do their job due to lack of resources) you can’t breathe. Your heart will stop. You can’t get blood and what little nutrients you have to viral organs.
Moral of the story? Don’t starve for an extended period. Not because of “starvation mode” or metabolic damage or even something as petty as losing muscle tone. Don’t do it because the reality is way more harsh than “maybe you won’t look as great in the end”
hey girl, okay i was prob a little dramatic lol, but just saying– my main point is that the majority of people who see this (for example, young girls) will simply leave with the idea that their body will just burn all of their fat away before they start burning their muscle. it doesn’t take long at ALL for your body to start eating away at muscle & weekly body comps show that. @iliaccrestandafloatingrib
Please don’t think I was coming at you or anything like that!! Saw the above post and got upset that somebody would use it as an excuse to starve, like you said. My response was just to educate some of these people exactly how harmful it can be. I know it didn’t seem that way, but I was agreeing with you. I just got caught up in the bio! I didn’t mean it to sound threatening or anything, sorry if it did!
no you’re good girl! i totally understand! (i relate to that when i’m taking my bio/chem courses too– and i’ve practically forgotten the majority of the info so i better catch up before i go back this winter 😂). i’m basically just going on things my nutritionist explains to me during our appointments. 😝 but yeah! i just don’t want uneducated people/young girls thinking they won’t do any “real” damage to any “important” (in quotes bc fat obviously has importance) parts of their bodies. so yeah girl you’re fine 😅💓
